And just like that, summer is nearly over.
August is often the hottest and driest months of the year, reliably bringing summer to a close. Watering becomes essential as we help plants cope with the heat, the vegetable patch is producing abundantly, and the lawn is getting plenty of use as a sunny spot to relax.
Things to do this month
- Check plants regularly to see if they need watering. If they do, give them a thorough soaking.
- Open greenhouse doors and vents on hot days.
- Turn the compost in your bin to keep it well aerated.
- Remove algae and black weed from waterways to prevent takeover.
- If you have a bird bath, keep them topped with water as birds need a daily supply of fresh water.
- Check plants and vegetables regularly for pests and diseases so they don’t get out of control.
- Leave a pile of twigs and seeds aside for wildlife to feast upon before they hibernate in autumn.
